PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE
We have been busy planning upcoming programs, so watch your emails for more information about them. We changed our May meeting date to May 22, so we would not conflict with WVNJ’s “Making Democracy Work” Event. Our program for May 22 will be on Ranked Choice Voting with a presentation by a representative from Voter Choice New Jersey. Come to see how ranked-choice voting works. We will email more information about this meeting.
Please come to our annual meeting on June 26th at the Community Center. We will be voting on officers, the budget for next year and on the newly revised by-laws. It will be a dinner meeting. More details will follow. If you are interested running for a board position, please let us know. They are President, Secretary, Treasurer, Voter Service Chair and Membership Chair. We will also have sign ups for committee members and will disseminate information about these before the meeting.

We are partnering with the National Council of Jewish Women on a National Voter Registration Day event on September 17th with various activities to encourage and educate about voting. Various other community organizations are also partners.
Two of our student members, Hudson Stelmak and Joshua Metters met with representatives of Vote16 NJ to promote efforts to lower the voting age in school board elections to 16. We as a League will be collaborating with them on these efforts.
As part of the State “Energizing Young Voters” program our League, with the help of our student members educated Livingston High School students about the importance of voting and registered eligible students to vote. The student chapter of the Livingston League of Women Voters registered over 40 students as part of High School Voter Registration Week.
We are working with the Morristown Area League and the League of Women Voters of the Montclair area to hold a candidates debate for the Republican candidates for District 11 US House of Representatives seat currently held by Congresswoman Mike Sherril. (The Democrats have decided not to debate each other). It will be virtual and held on May 14th. We will email additional details.
Five of our members, Amy Ipp, Fang Gong, Parul Khemka, Laurie Babij and Robin Weiss gave materials about the OPRA bill (S2930/A4045) gutting OPRA protections to our District 27 state legislators, Assemblywomen Rosy Bagolie and Alixon Collazos-Gill and State Senator John McKeon.
The State LWVNJ asks that members please prepare to come to Trenton on Thursday, 5/9, to demonstrate your opposition if the bill is posted for a committee vote.
