PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE
We look forward to the Campaign School at Yale Workshop on running for office,
campaign management and civic engagement led by our superstar member, its Director, Patricia Russo. Registration has gone well and we are expecting it to be an informative session. Thank you, Patti, for bringing a little bit of New Haven down to Livingston .
We are holding a meeting this coming Wednesday at 7:30 PM to reach consensus about the US League of Women Voters program. LWVUS Program consists of three parts:
• Action to implement League Principles
• Study or concurrence on a governmental issue to develop new positions or to
update existing positions
• Action on government issues
We will fill out a survey based on our discussion and submit it to LWVUS. This is a grassroots
process for choosing the League Program for 2024-2026 in which all of the local leagues participate. We will send information about League positions and a copy of the survey that you can read in advance of the meeting.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
We had a successful day at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of service. Thanks to the help of our student volunteers and “older” members we registered quite a few members, provided voter education and had children write letters to Mayor Al Anthony. These letters were presented to Mayor Anthony at the January 22nd Town Council Meeting attended by several of our members. The Livingston Committee on Diversity organized a very moving program at the MLK event.
Membership
We welcome the following new members: Michael and Gabrielle Vieira, Vineeta Khanna, Hudson Stelmak and Joshua Metters. We are now up to 54 members. Please remember to renew your membership if you have not already done so. You can fill out membership forms and pay online this year. You will still be able to submit checks if you wish. Please contact us if you wish to pay by check or are unable to connect to our website: https://www.livingstonlwv.org/.
Livingston League of Women Voters Board
As we mentioned in an email to our membership, we are reinstating a volunteer Board of Directors to help shape policy decisions and carry out the work of our League. Members will include our officers: Amy Ipp, Robin Weiss, Judith Friedman and Debra Schein and League members Laurie Babij. Parul Kemka, Harsh Raju and Joyce Xiong. We will hold a Zoom meeting at 7 PM to discuss various items on February 7th before the Program Planning Meeting. Any other member is welcome to attend to hear what is going on. From LWVNJ
Energizing Young Voters: April 14 through April 20, 2024 is high school voter registration week! Work with Energizing Young Voters (EYV) to help schools in your community educate and register their students. We hope to assist in this effort at Livingston High School, the Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy and the Newark Academy.
Moderator Training- February 18th: If you would like to explore becoming a Moderator, this free workshop is the first step. Upon successful completion of the workshop, you can choose whether to become a Moderator in Training and undertake additional hands-on work with candidate forums to become certified to moderate within New Jersey. Space is limited. REGISTER
2024 Legislative Interviews: Members from every local League are needed to conduct legislative interviews. Each year, League members schedule meetings with their NJ State Assembly Members and Senators to discuss their legislative priorities and views on the League's issues. This is an amazing opportunity to build a relationship with your legislators and to represent the League. We participated in this last year and it was a wonderful experience. We encourage you to volunteer to help with this effort. Please let us know if you are willing to join us on the Zoom interviews, as we would like to get the process started soon.
2024 Legislative Open House: Please drop by League headquarters at 204 West State Street in Trenton anytime from 10 am – 2 pm on Monday, 2/12/24. We will be celebrating the League’s birthday AND welcoming new and returning legislators back to Trenton. This is a great opportunity for relationship building between the League, League members, and NJ Senate and Assembly representatives. We hope you consider stopping by! Please email ekapp@lwvnj.org to let us know you are coming.
Callathon Reimagined: During the month of February, instead of asking local Leagues to call their members and urge them to give, we are running a rapid response digital campaign. Each local League will have their own “team” page and a unique link. Share the link with your members, your friends, and on social media to raise as much money as you can. Your local League will receive 20% back of all funds raised on your team page.
